Taking Artistry & Craftsmanship to the Outdoors

James Purdey & Sons has been synonymous with craftsmanship and excellence since its founding in 1814. Renowned for its bespoke sporting guns and rifles, its evolution to include clothing and accessories in the 1970s allowed this ethos and heritage to expand. Each piece made by Purdey is built on the history of what came before it, embodying tradition, precision, and artistry, designed to last for generations.

“As a heritage brand, we balance modern technology with the importance of craft and tradition, each enhancing the other to consolidate world-class craftsmanship”

The hours of craftsmanship that goes into building a Purdey gun make each one a unique work of art. “In gun-making, honouring the exchange of skills between master craftsmen and our apprentices is at the heart of what we do, underlining our continued commitment to craft and our reputation for making the world’s finest sporting firearms – past, present and future.” says Dan Jago, Purdey CEO & Chairman. Each Purdey gun is bespoke for the client, a process that can take up to two years. The Sidelock Double Rifle, for example, requires around 1,000 hours of hands-on time to produce. It’s a tour de force of the gunmaker’s art, the ultimate combination of craftsmanship and artistry. The size of the action, specially scaled for much higher pressures, lends itself to commissioning a piece that is an expression of the engraver’s art as well as the gunmaker’s skill. The results are exceptional and striking, and it is no wonder that this gun often forms the pinnacle of any collection.

There are over 75,000 different permutations to choose from when creating a Purdey gun, and the skill of their expert advisory team lies in helping clients to navigate these choices. Once the mechanics are decided, aesthetic customizations range from gold or silver inlays to intricate bespoke engraving patterns incorporating precious metals. The potential for embellishment is endless, allowing clients to leave their mark on the finished gun and really make it their own.

This year, Purdey is launching a special collector’s gun to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Woodward model. “While many details remain under wraps, the design honors the combined heritage of Woodward and Purdey,” Jago shares. The 12- bore calibre, none of which have been produced since 1995, will feature 29-inch barrels favored by Woodward collectors, with an overall shape inspired by the original Purdey-Woodward No. 26,113. The completed gun will be accompanied by a brass- mounted oak and leather case lined in Woodward scarlet goatskin, with accessories engraved with the Woodward name. It will also be accompanied by a limited-edition history of James Woodward & Sons, written and signed by Purdey Gunroom Manager, Dr. Nicholas Harlow.

“As a heritage brand that balances the advantages of modern technology with the importance of craft and tradition, we know that both elements can successfully co-exist, each enhancing the other to consolidate world-class Purdey craftsmanship,” Jago explains. In gunmaking, this means integrating computer-aided design with techniques perfected over 200 years. In clothing and accessories, Purdey incorporates high-performance materials and advanced machining, such as Dornier tweed looms, to elevate the wearer’s experience of the outdoors.

The Purdey clothing collection is as timeless as its guns and rifles, drawing on the best of British and Irish makers and incorporating techniques and materials tied to distinct regions. In knitwear, lightweight blends of cashmere and wool ensure pieces remain timeless and travel well. While sporting and technical styles integrate lightweight fabrics and breathable layers, balancing protective and functional elements that are well suited to simulated or game shooting, falconry, and hiking trips. “Although the UK provides the starting point, our pieces are created for maximum versatility in all environments, designed with modern explorers in mind,” says Jago. Purdey’s handcrafted knives, for example, are invaluable sporting tools for outdoor enthusiasts, and works of art in themselves. They feature Damascus steel blades and wood or rare bone handles, plus special- edition details like blackened blades with hand- hammered 24-carat gold inlays, each accompanied by a custom-fitted leather sheath.

“The best place to experience Purdey is with our shooting school,” adds Jago. Purdey at the Royal Berkshire is the pioneer of British simulated shooting, with a landscape designed to match the thrill of shooting game. This year, it’s undergoing an exciting update to its world-class facilities, while remaining open for private tuition with expert instructors who are some of the most skilled in the business, plus bespoke corporate events and charity days. Beyond the school, Purdey’s ‘Really Wild’ simulated days offer teams an exhilarating experience at exclusive estates around the UK, where participants get the chance to fire more than 200 shots per drive and enjoy 5-star hospitality and access. Additionally, the Purdey Sporting Agency organizes over 100 bespoke trips each year, providing unique shooting experiences at estates in the UK, Spain, South Africa, and South America. “Our 2025 calendar of events is looking particularly strong, with some exciting new locations being introduced throughout the year,” Jago concludes. “We look forward to lots more time spent enjoying the great outdoors together.”
