Discover the sources that spark the designers’ inspiration and learn about the intricate craftsmanship that goes into the final pieces, embodying the values of Fatto a Mano – or hand-made. Featuring one-off items from their Alta Moda, Alta Sartoria and Alta Gioielleria collections, each room of the exhibition displays Dolce&Gabbana’s bespoke creations against a backdrop of spectacular installations that plunge you into the heart of their world.
The expansive sources of Dolce&Gabbana’s inspiration unfold before you as you move from room to room, each space an homage to a facet of Italian culture that has informed their work. Spanning art to architecture, the topography
of cities to music, ballet to opera, each theme is simultaneously rooted in the two founders’ abiding love of traditional craftsmanship, their Italian heritage, and passion for la dolce vita. Plus, woven into the exhibition is work by visual artists created in dialogue with Dolce&Gabbana’s celebrated designs.
The exhibition’s curator, Florence Muller extends it as an invitation to discover the creative universe of Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana as revealed in their Alta Moda, Alta Sartoria, and Alta Gioielleria collections. A deep attachment to traditional Italian handcraft kindled their desire to venture into haute couture after the establishment of their successful prêt-à-porter fashion house in 1985.
Building on deep family traditions, Sicilian
for Domenico Dolce and Milanese for Stefano Gabbana, the designers envision collections rich
in artistic and cultural references drawn from painting, architecture, sculpture, interior decoration, or theater arts… Their creations are presented in emblematic locations in Italy as a spectacular homage to their sources of inspiration. Under their guidance, artists-artisans take their trades to a new level, envisioning tomorrow’s innovations based on time-honored know-how.
Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana have succeeded in realizing this dream because they are among the rare designers who are both the founders and the owners of their fashion house and thus free to do whatever they like. And one thing they love is to pay tribute to the passion of those who create beauty through the intelligence of their hands.
