Seiko Presage draws inspiration from one of Japan's most celebrated textile traditions, transforming the beauty of Tomioka silk into a collection that honors craftsmanship, culture, and mechanical watchmaking.

The finest luxury objects often tell stories that extend far beyond their immediate function. For Seiko, that story frequently begins with Japanese craftsmanship and cultural heritage. The latest additions to the Presage Classic Series continue that tradition, drawing inspiration from Tomioka silk, one of Japan’s most celebrated textile legacies.

Produced in the region surrounding the historic Tomioka Silk Mill in Gunma Prefecture, Tomioka silk has long been prized for its exceptional quality. Distinguished by its smooth texture, subtle sheen, and elegant drape, the material represents generations of expertise passed down through skilled artisans. The silk mill itself occupies a significant place in Japanese history, having served as the center of the nation’s silk industry since its establishment in 1872. Today, the site is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and remains a symbol of Japan’s industrial and cultural development.

Seiko has translated the character of the silk itself into the design of the watch. The result is a collection of four timepieces whose dials capture the flowing texture and luminous quality of finely woven Tomioka silk.

At first glance, the effect is subtle. Under changing light, however, intricate dial patterns reveal themselves through delicate reflections that mimic the movement of silk fabric. The surface appears to shift and ripple, creating a sense of depth that rewards closer inspection. It is an approach that reflects a distinctly Japanese design philosophy, where beauty often emerges gradually through observation rather than immediate spectacle.

The centerpiece of the collection is a limited edition of 2,000 pieces. Its dial takes inspiration from the pristine whiteness of a rare silkworm variety cultivated in Gunma Prefecture and is enhanced with a pearl-like finish that creates a refined, almost luminous glow. Paired with a pink-gold-colored case and a rich brown leather strap inspired by the iconic red-brick architecture of the Tomioka Silk Mill, the watch balances warmth, elegance, and historical reference with remarkable restraint.

Alongside the limited edition, Seiko introduces three regular-production models that continue the exploration of traditional Japanese colors associated with silk craftsmanship. Each dial reflects a hue deeply rooted in Japanese culture and aesthetics.

The first, shironeri, presents a pure and immaculate white inspired by refined silk threads. The second, wakatake-iro, draws from the fresh green tones traditionally used in kimono dyeing, evoking the vitality of young bamboo. The third, sakura-iro, captures the delicate pink of cherry blossoms, a color that has occupied a special place in Japanese art and design for centuries. Together, the three watches create a palette that celebrates both nature and craftsmanship while highlighting the extraordinary luster associated with Tomioka silk

Beyond their visual appeal, the watches showcase the technical expertise for which the Presage collection has become known. Each model houses Seiko’s automatic Caliber 6R51 movement, offering a power reserve of approximately 72 hours. The collection is presented in a versatile 38mm case size, reinforcing its classic proportions and timeless character.

Perhaps most significantly, the collection extends beyond design itself. Seiko has announced that a portion of proceeds from the Presage range will support the Tomioka Silk Promotion Organization, helping preserve and promote the region’s centuries- old silk-making tradition for future generations
